Cisco has partnered with UK startup Oxbotica to demonstrate how they might gather data from autonomous vehicles via Wi-Fi hotspots using OpenRoam, a federation of identity providers, network service providers and equipment vendors

In tests, the companies hope to show how vehicles fitted out with Oxbotica software could upload and download data at hotspots deployed to gas stations, electric vehicle charging stations, parking garages and other places vehicles stop for periods of time.

This capability could help support the management of autonomous fleets that Cisco says would need to transfer 8.3GB of data per day to and from each vehicle.

IT pros across a broad spectrum of UK industries can compete for £30 million in a government-funded competition to encourage business use of 5G wireless technology.

The 5G Create competition is aimed at developing new use cases and business models for 5G applications and services. Start-ups and established companies may apply for the funds as part of the competition, which opens in early March and runs until the end of June 2020, according to the government announcement of the program. The government expects to receive bids from film, TV, video gaming and tourism industries, as well as sectors such as energy, water, logistics, health and social care.

A major revamp of Cisco’s network certification program started this week, so IT pros seeking to beef up their credentials – and those looking to renew certifications they’ve already earned – face a different set of requirements.

The overhaul of the cert exams means changes to the body of knowledge that IT pros need to master in order to qualify. It also introduces Cisco DevNet certifications focused on programming that are meant to prepare candidates for employment in Cisco networking environments that rely more and more on software.
